And, in a more cheerful vein:
Duvet by BoA: I love this song because it was so startling to me the first time I heard it, as the theme song to Serial Experiments Lain. That anime was big for me when I was in college, and promising myself an episode got me through a lot of really shitty assignments. And the song is just gorgeous, especially the acoustic version.
Strange Little Girl by Tori Amos (cover): I love this song because it is my theme song, it's a song I kind of feel in my bones. Strangely, when I hear it, it always makes me feel better about being a little left of center. It's nice. Do you know where you could be going?
Thin Blue Flame by Josh Ritter: This one just hits me viscerally every time I hear it. There are Laurel and Hardy references, too. It's awesome, and it hurts so good.
In darkness he looks for the light that has died
But you need faith for the same reasons that it's so hard to find
And this whole thing is headed for a terrible wreck
And like good tragedy that's what we expect.
A & B song by Tom McRae: I really like all of his stuff, especially his self-titled album. But this one has this back and forth between A and B that I kind of love, and the end is just--the instrumentals combined with the background vocals under the chorus--yeah. Epic win.
If hell is in the detail
Babe I'm a microscope
I know i'll live to see you swinging
Given enough rope
Shameless by Ani diFranco: This one--I think it's more of a wistful thing. I kind of wish I could be like this. And the jangling harshness of the guitar gets me every time. I also kind of love that she left in the two flubs in the beginning.
if I had any sense
I guess I'd fear this
I guess I'd keep it down
so no one would hear this
I guess I'd shut my mouth
and rethink a minute
but I can't shut it now
'cuz there's something in it
Deluxe War Baby by Burning Airlines: It is so angry and jerky-sounding through the instrumentals. I adore it.
Never have I felt so well-policed
Why should I be anything but pleased?
God's Gonna Cut You Down By Johnny Cash (cover): I love the spareness of this version, and the driving beat behind it. It's the music I write papers to, which should tell you something.
The Mercy Seat by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Another song on my paper-writing playlist. This one is about a guy going to the electric chair for murder. It's relatively atonal and it's got a fairly driving rhythm, too. It works.
Load it Up by Matthew Good Band: Who could not love a song with these lyrics? Really. Who?
Picture yourself at the MGM grand
Murphy's fighting Occam, you're in the stands
This Year by The Mountain Goats: This song contains my mantra for the past three or four years.
I am going to make it through this year if it kills me.
So there you go.
