Well, here we are

Certain truths are now obvious, and I wish they weren't truths.

But here we are, and there's a lot of fighting left to do.

I'm so scared, but I'm not dead yet.

Year-end is always a ridiculous time at work, and then there is travel and dealing with extended relations and shenanigans. So.

Here is this.

This week can go to the dogs. The angry Hellhound type dogs. This I vow.

Year end at work is destroying my will to live, I swear.

In light of that, love meme time!

In a land before time . . . meme-sheep ruled the world!

Stolen from everyone and their mother . . . twice.

Pick a character* I've written and I will give and explain the top five** ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.

* Try to make it someone I've written either often (including characters I RP'ed) or recently in order for me to answer. [My addition: you don't have to! But if I've only written them once or twice, you'll probably get a shorter answer, and I may be coming up with it off the cuff.]
** May not actually be five.

Because Valentine's Day is not my holiday, but Galentine's Day might be

I don't watch much Parks and Rec, but several people that I know do, and they had the lovely idea of taking some time to appreciate the online (and offline) ladies, women, and girls that we all know and love.

So!

Happy Galentine's Day

YMMV post

Winter is always my long dark teatime of the soul. And in that spirit, some things that I have recently spent some time thinking about. There are some obvious pop culture references. Surprise!

1) You can't always get what you want.

2) Sometimes a thing gets broke can't be fixed.

3) Love is pain.

4) When you're going through Hell, keep going.

5) Hell is other people.

6) I am assured, yes I am assured, yes
I am assured that peace will come to me
A peace that can, yes surpass the speed, yes
Of my understanding and my need

7) I can see blue in the sky when it's raining.

8) Emptying Town
--after Provincetown

Each fall this town empties, leaving me
drained, standing on the dock, waving bye-
bye, the white handkerchief
stuck in my throat. You know the way Jesus

rips open his shirt
to show us his heart, all flaming & thorny,
the way he points to it. I'm afraid
the way I miss you

will be this obvious. I have

a friend who everyone warns me
is dangerous, he hides
bloody images of Jesus around my house

for me to find when I come home--Jesus
behind the cupboard door, Jesus tucked

into the mirror. He wants to save me
but we disagree from what. My version of hell
is someone ripping open his
shirt & saying

look what I did for you.

Meme! Well, answers to a meme, mostly. And then the meme proper. If you want.

Comment with "Come at me, bro," and:
- I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
- Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
- Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people question

These questions are from Sweeney )

Anything beats waking up at 1 am to the shenanigans of drunk professors

Currently I am at a professional conference. The kind that is -- aside from the meetings and the disseminating of scientific information, a lot more like summer camp than a conference. For one, we are housed in dormitories.

For another, there are afternoon activities! I am, to no one's surprise, in my decently-sized and yet Hollywood nun-ishly spare dorm room reading books. Kate Griffin's Matthew Swift series entertains me immensely, and I do not want to put it down. Sadly I was also thwarted in picking up the final Demon's Lexicon book, though kindle saved me from that, so that one is next in the queue.

And since I will have long, long hours of sitting around watching presentations about DNA that mean very little to me personally (this is the day with the least useful stuff for me, so it goes) --

Always been one for following the crowd

THE YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL MEME

My thread.

It has been a week. A good week, one with some positive changes at work and out, I think.

But still, change is stressful.

So is attempting to regulate the temperature in my apartment without resorting to A/C and heating. Windows open = too cold, windows closed = too hot -- I clearly cannot win. And it makes me sleep less. But I have figured out which windows to open and when in order to optimize my sleeping experience and STOP WAKING UP at 3:30 am.

Dear lord.

Random stuff

So work is called on account of snow.

I cannot say I am complaining. However, it also means that I get to work on laundry and cleaning my apartment tomorrow.

Whee? *dry dry dry*

To keep myself busy, both tonight and tomorrow, have a meme I snagged from [livejournal.com profile] ashen_key:

Pick a character I write, and I will give you the top five ideas/concepts/other I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to depicting them accurately. includes both fandom and original RP characters.

Can I also say I hate annual evaluations at work? I am crap at talking myself up without feeling like I am going overboard. *makes face*

Maybe tomorrow will somehow give me new perspective on it!

And now a word from not-a-sponsor

It has now been a year since I moved to Boston. I find myself weirded out by how fast that year has gone by, and how amazingly not-arduous it was. Before this I had never lived outside my home state before, I had never spent more than three months away from home, I'd never lived entirely alone. But it's gone pretty well, I think. I love my job, I like my coworkers, the stuff I get to do every day is interesting.

Sure, I have less energy than I used to, especially for things like IM and RP, but I think that'll pick up again once the end-of-year push is done. Sure, everything here is more expensive than back in Pittsburgh (oh my god rent why are you SO HIGH???), but I have friends that live close by, and the public transportation is nothing to sneeze at.

I even, knock on wood, get imposter syndrome less often than I did in grad school.

So all in all I think it's been good for me, living out here. I'm hoping next year is even better. I'm hoping the same for all of you.

And hey, maybe I'll even start updating my LJ more than once ever six months. *holds breath*

And because winter is my long, dark teatime of the soul -- my post at the Holiday Love Meme.

Meme time

It's Friday, the day is flying, and I could use something to think about as I do some monotonous tasks.

Name a fictional canon/fandom I know, and I'll tell you:
01. The first character I fell in love with:
02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
03. The character I would shag anytime:
04. The character I'd slap:
05. Who are my 3 favorite characters.
06. What are my 3 favorite pairings.
07. Which character you're most like.
08. The coolest thing about the canon:
09. The lamest thing about the canon:
10. My guiltiest pleasure in this fandom:
11. What story I wish I could read (or art I wish I could see):
12. What story I wish I had written/still want to write (or art, respectively):

If you name something I don't know or follow, I will tell you to ask me for something else.

What do you do with a displaced Lynne? MEMES. Obviously.

Given that this is my week of glorious vacation, and I am fed and comfortable and waiting for the workday to be over for people who are not as gainfully unemployed as I am so that we can all run free in the cold and the rain together --

Have a meme.

A. Has my portrayal of a character(s) changed the way you think of him/her?

B. Pick one of my characters and I'll answer the following questions about him or her.
1. What would your character kill for? What would they die for?
2. What would they refuse to do under any circumstances? Why?
3. What do they dream about?
4. What’s their biggest fear?
5. What single object would they be most hard pressed to part with? Why?
6. What is their fondest memory?
7. What is their worst memory?
8. What or who was were their most significant influence? Expound.
9. What do they believe makes a successful life?
10. What makes them laugh?
11. What are their religious views?
12. What is their greatest strength?
13. Do they have a fatal flaw? If so, what is it?
14. Who is the most important person in their life?
15. If they died, who would miss them most? How would they die?

C. Pick a fandom, any fandom I'm in. I will tell you some stuff that may involve canon ships, fanon ships, fanon trends, and whether or not I think things jumped the shark or went absolutely nuts, or where I myself stopped watching and why!

You can choose any or all of these options.

My fandoms include Milliways characters and fandoms (including broad DC and Marvel, but I am not an encyclopedia, so that will be a factor), most popular sci-fi/fantasy books/movies/tv, but anything that premiered in the last two years that is not sci-fi/fantasy, Life, or Dexter, I have probably not seen enough of to wax epic about it.

RP stuff

Since I have a stupid meeting in an hour that will require me to sit and watch other people talk for two hours when I could be working on my thesis -- a meme! So that I have potentially something fun and/or funny to look forward to doing once Hell Hours are over!

PICK ONE OF MY CHARACTERS AND I WILL TELL YOU:
→ why I decided to play this character
→ my favorite scene or bit of interaction concerning this character to date
→ my favorite original aspect about this character (world-building for ocs or head-canon for fcs)
→ the last thing they did "off screen"
→ what their last words would be if they died tomorrow
→ what the next thing I'm doing for them is (narrative, post, shelving, whatever)

BONUS ROUND:
» I will tell you what character of yours I'd like to play mine against
» you may ask me a free question

My thoughts on RaceFail '09: I have a keen eye for the obvious

I've spent most of this conversation/imbroglio/failboat listening to other people talk, paying attention to who is saying what, commenting where I either had something I really wanted to say or felt I had something to contribute, and just trying to take it all in. I'm not the best communicator in online media, and I don't really use this journal as a platform to talk to an audience, because I'm not really a blogger.

But in the past couple weeks I've started to really want to say something, except I didn't know what it was. I still don't. Here's what I've got anyway:

I think I'm getting tired of people being dismissive of conversations that don't make them comfortable, putting their heads in the sand and going 'la la la I can't hear you and furthermore why are you still talking?'. I'm tired of people having the opinion that if they don't approve of a conversation's direction, or its origins, or the 'tone', that it's worthless for everyone and clearly wankery.

I'm really damn tired of people missing the point and letting themselves get distracted from conversations about race and racism, in genre fiction or not, that need to happen.

And I think [livejournal.com profile] verb_noire, [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc, and [livejournal.com profile] fight_derailing are good things to engage with. I certainly appreciate them.
